In 1961 Lionel /Triang released a series of three engineering labs coming in a series of 3 or 4 levels of size. They are: Electronics Engineering Labs Mark 1 (No. 3200), Mark 2 (No. 3201), Mark 3 (No. 3202), & Mark 4 (no. 3203); Plastics Engineering Labs Mark 1 (No. 3226), Mark 2 (No. 3227), Mark 3 (No. 3228) & Mark 4 (No. 3229); The Weather Station Mark 1 (No. 3251), Mark 2 (No. 3252) & Mark 3 (No. 3255). Also Lionel and Triang were in a business agreement and Triang would produce and sell these sets in Europe. This was the only year Triang produced these engineering sets.
In 1962 Lionel updated the Electronics Engineering Lab Mark 1 (No. 3210) and the Plastics Engineering Mark 1a (No. 3225). The sets had a set box made of cardboard in 1961 and it was now made with a plastic set box. Also, this year refills for the Plastics Labs were produced as (No. 3230 box) and (No. 3231 box) & (No. 3226-76 packet). The updated Weather Stations became The Mark 1 (No. 3253), Mark 2 (No. 3254). Also, a new series, Communication Engineering Labs, produced as Mark 1 (No. 3270), Mark 2 (No. 3271), Mark 3 (No. 3272) & Mark 4 (No. 3273) were offered. All the other sets from 1961 were offered again. Remember Triang did not do any of this. Lionel from this time on tried to get rid of all Engineering Sets sets
In 1964 Lionel offered 1 new electronics set made up of left-over inventory (No. 3223)
Lionel planned on releasing two new series of engineering labs in 1963. Optics Lab Mark 1 (No. 3290) and Mark 2 (No. 3291). Astronomy Lab Mark 1 (No. 3310), Mark 2 (No. 3311), Mark 3 (No. 3312) and Mark 4 (No. 3313). They were never produced. The prototypes shown below are from the Lionel Archives and are the ones shown in the catalog.
